A spin move is an effective way to get away from the defense.
A spin move in basketball is one of the most effective ways to get around your defender while driving to the basketball hoop. It is a dribbling move in which you rotate, or spin, your body around the defender while moving forward toward the basket protecting the basketball from him with your body. A good spin move makes it much easier for you to score and should be added to your arsenal of offensive weapons.1.
Keeping the basketball low and under control, dribble toward your opponent and take a first hard dribble toward the defender with your dominant hand. The lower you keep the basketball, the harder it will be for the defender to steal or deflect it.2.
While dribbling with your right hand, put your left foot in between your defender's feet, splitting them and making it hard for him or her to move laterally and keep up with you.3.
Keeping the ball away from the defender, begin to rotate your body 180-degrees away from him while pulling the ball to the right in the direction you are spinning with your right hand. Spin to your right, placing your back between the defender and the basketball.4.
With your back toward the defender, complete another 180-degree turn, still moving in the same direction while pulling the ball from your right hand to your left hand as quickly as you can while still dribbling.5.
Continue your forward momentum toward the basket, dribbling with your left hand and keeping the ball away from the defender.6.
Dribble toward the basket and shoot a lay-up or a short jump shot or look to pass once you have cleared the defender.
- When completing any offensive move, dribble toward the basket and not side to side to help create scoring opportunities for yourself and your teammates.
- Practice drills before trying it in a game situation.
